Delas Freres Condrieu ‘La Galopine’
January 24, 2018, Jeb Dunnuck
“The entry-level release from Condrieu is the 2016 La Galopine, which offers a clean, classic, elegant style in its buttered peach, marmalade, and floral aromas and flavors, with more toasty notes on the palate. It’s beautifully balanced, has the classic Viognier richness, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years.”

“There is an attractive, complex and solid edge to this Condrieu with white peach and apricot fruits opening out onto a smoothly-rendered palate. Some nectarine and citrus fruits, too. Drink now.”
On the right or west bank of the Rhône adjacent to the vineyards of Côte-Rôtie, the Condrieu area is one of the world‘s most elite. The steep vineyards are difficult to cultivate, and as a result only 50 acres in Condrieu are currently under vine. Here, Delas controls a small hillside vineyard in the Vérin area planted exclusively to Viognier. Soils are granite-based with a fine topsoil of decomposed mica that washes away easily. The Viognier is finicky with low yields (about 1.5 tons/acre), yet the limited quantities of wine it produces can be exquisite.
The grapes are picked by hand in small bins. After harvest, gentle pressing produces a must that ferments in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 61°F-64°F in order to make the most of the complex aromas of the Viognier variety. Each year, a variable part of the crop (20% maximum) is fermented in new oak casks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked and then aged on fine lees in order to improve the richness of its structure, while keeping its exceptional varietal aromas.
The color is a straw yellow, with green tinges. This Condrieu has layers of amazingly powerful and complex aromas: violets, apricots, peaches, honey and dried fruit. On the palate, these exuberant flavors are rich, powerful, and highly seductive, with an unctuous texture and a mass of exotic fruit on the finish.
