Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Noir Les Princes Abbés
Vintage: 2015 (Current)
With a single holding of more than 330 acres in Guebwiller, Domaines Schlumberger is the largest Grands Crus producer in Alsace. All Schlumberger wines are estate-grown. Because of the aridity and steepness of the domains, the yields are about 50 percent of the average for the appellation of Alsace. The resulting grapes are very high quality and have exceptional flavor concentration. For over 200 years, the Schlumberger family has devoted itself to farming the vineyards with passion, dedication and respect to the environment.
The Les Princes Abbés range is the Schlumberger family’s tribute to the Abbots who were the first to sell wine from Guebwiller.
The 2015 Pinot Noir is a beautiful, intense, ruby color. It has a very pleasant nose of red fruits and cooked Alsatian plums that develop notes of sous-bois. It is fresh on the palate and marked by silky tannins due to being macerated for 12 days. Product of a great year, this is a beautiful example of a high quality Pinot Noir that is smooth and flavorful. It enhances grilled red meat, cheeses, and small game. It may easily be cellared three to four years, but it is enjoyable now.
The robe is ruby red with purple highlights and of good intensity. The nose is pleasant, profound and has achieved ideal maturity. The onset in the mouth is ample and shows a nice silky touch. The wine evolves on a medium with a soft but pleasant vivacity. The finish shows a very full‐bodied wine. The range of flavors is articulated around spices and liquorice. Still with reduction and smoky notes. The tannin structure is supple, slightly astringent. Its structure is compact and marked by silky tannin.
Serve this wine with white meat such as a rack of veal in its juice with potato purée. Poultry fricassée with Paris mushrooms or a traditional pot-au-feu. Serve at 60°F.
