Meerlust Estate has been part of the Myburgh family tradition for eight generations, dating back to 1693. Long recognized for producing world-class wines, the Meerlust Estate is singularly rich in charm and history. Meerlust produces wines that are true to the intrinsic character of their vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The diverse soils, the unique coastal climate and over 300 years of dedication are all essential components of Meerlust's complex, rich and truly distinctive wines.
Selected from 27 year old, Estate-grown Merlot plantings situated on clay-rich Oak leaf, Vilafontes and Klapmuts soil. 40% vendage vert (green harvesting cluster removal) at 60% veraison to ensure concentration and even-ripening. The grapes were picked by hand and selected before crushing. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks with partial uninnoculated fermentation. Daily remontage and delistage for gentle extraction occurred. A portion of the wine was given extended maceration on the skins for four weeks before pressing. Malolactic fermentation proceeded in 300 liter French oak Hogsheads. Maturation in 60 percent new Nevers French oak, 40% percent second-fill Nevers for 18 months before bottling.
The wine is a deep, youthful purple color with a ruby rim. It has an intense dark fruit on the nose, mulberry and damson plum with hints of dark chocolate and spice. The full bodied palate offers generous, ripe, pure Merlot fruit with refreshing acidity, structured yet silky tannins and pronounced length and minerality. There is a core of juiciness, opulence and richness typical of the variety.
Serve the wine at 18°C - 19°C with red meats, game and strong cheeses.
