“Fruit for the 2015 Barbera d’Alba Fides comes from the Colombaro vineyard (where Chardonnay is also planted) in Serralunga d’Alba. In fact, these vineyards are legally registered to produced Barolo and the name Fides (“faith”) is a nod to the hope and promise placed in the Barbera grape. This is a three-hectare plot that makes some 7,000 bottles per year. Yields are very low. The vines were planted in 1992 and the clone produces smaller berries and clusters. Indeed, the wine’s appearance is impenetrable and black as a result. The bouquet is full and generous, and the wine reveals its big bones in terms of mouthfeel.”
The Pio Cesare family’s unique winemaking method stresses minimal intervention to produce wines of particularly supple flavor expression. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio Cesare's choices in the cellar: shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection for barrel and large cask aging, and bottling schedules determined by the ideal structure of each wine. This allows Pio Cesare to craft wines of varying weight, ageability and drinkability as determined by the vineyard rather than market fashion.

This is a single vineyard Barbera from Pio Cesare's "Colombaro" vineyard near the famous Ornato estate in Serralunga d’Alba. “Fides” is Latin for trust and faith. A true act of faith and trust was made by the Pio Cesare family when, instead of nebbiolo, the winery planted barbera in a vineyard where a great Barolo could have been produced. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. There is skin contact for about 10 days. Right after the drawing off, the wine rests 20 months in medium-toasted French oak casks, 80 percent in barriques and 20 percent in 20 hectoliter casks.
Fresh ripe fruit, pulp and spices provide the Barbera d’Alba Fides with body, structure, depth, full concentration and harmony of flavors. This is a sumptuous wine and meant to age.
