Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato DOCG
November 2018, Antonio Galloni
“Pio Cesare's 2014 Barolo Ornato is a pretty, beguiling wine, although I expected to see a bit more depth and overall textural resonance. Usually much more of a powerhouse, the Ornato is decidedly medium in body in 2014. Even so, it offers a good bit of persistence, with hints of orange zest, mint, kirsch and dried flowers that add complexity to the Nebbiolo fruit.”
September 30, 2018, Bruce Sanderson
“Tightly wound, offering cherry, plum, wild herb, tar and spice flavors matched to a tensile frame. More savory than fruity, with the finish compact and unyielding today. Best from 2022 through 2035. 700 cases made.”

“Pio Cesare's top Barolo comes from Ornato in Serralunga. The nose is intense, with ripe, pure raspberry, redcurrant and rose petal aromas. It's very concentrated, yet is sleek and discreet rather than flashy, with firm but not aggressive tannins. It's unusually forward for Serralunga, but has the stuffing to age.”
April 24, 2018, James Suckling
This is very spicy and fruity one with perfumed and bright aromas. Leather, too. Medium-bodied, refined and layered with beautiful ripe tannins. Fine, polished texture with berry and walnut undertones. Drink or hold.
The Pio Cesare family’s unique winemaking method stresses minimal intervention to produce wines of particularly supple flavor expression. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio Cesare's choices in the cellar: shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection for barrel and large cask aging, and bottling schedules determined by the ideal structure of each wine. This allows Pio Cesare to craft wines of varying weight, ageability and drinkability as determined by the vineyard rather than market fashion.
Year after year, the wines of Pio Cesare are recognized for their consistency and regional expression. From world-class Barolo and Barbaresco to crisp Cortese and sweet Moscato, the wines of Pio Cesare offer exceptional quality and variety.
This is a single-vineyard Barolo from very ripe grapes of three different plots of the famous Pio Cesare family’s Ornato Estate in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the top vineyards in the whole Barolo area. It is fermented in stainless steel with skin contact for 15 days and aged in mid-toasted French oak for 36 months, 70 percent in new barriques and 30 percent in 25 hectoliter casks.
This wine has great structure and concentration, with ripe fruit, soft tannins and tobacco. May be appreciated immediately, but with a very long life. It is produced in small quantities and only in excellent vintages.
