MMD Launches New Label
Oakland, Calif.—Maisons Marques & Domaines released the Carpe Diem label consisting of two new wines, a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that focus on the essence of Firepeak Vineyard terroir combined with a traditional Burgundian style.
The picturesque Firepeak Vineyard is located just three miles from the Pacific Ocean and offers optimal growing conditions for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with its warm days and cool evenings.
« The resurrection of the Carpe Diem label has been considered for some time, however we wanted to wait for the perfect moment. I believe we’ve found that timing with Firepeak Vineyard and Winemaker Christian Roguenant, » says Gregory Balogh, President of Maisons Marques & Domaines. Balogh is a veteran of the wine industry including several years as a principal at a Burgundy négociant. He continues his passion for Burgundy varietals through the Carpe Diem label.
At the helm of Carpe Diem is Winemaker Christian Roguenant, a Central Coast vintner with over 15 years of experience. Roguenant hails from Dijon, France and brings an extensive knowledge of the local terroir coupled with an intimate understanding of Burgundian winemaking.
Winemaker Christian Roguenant states, « My philosophy of winemaking is this: give me rough but nice diamonds; my job is to polish without scratching them. » He strongly believes that Firepeak Vineyard produces some of the best fruit in the Central Coast.
Firepeak Vineyard is comprised of seven different Pinot Noir clones which come from the Pommard and Dijon regions of France. Planted in the early 90’s, these vines were chosen for their smaller fruit clusters which generally ripen faster yielding intense and vibrant flavors. Entirely hand harvested and sorted, each lot is kept separately in small open-top fermentators until final blending. With the combined experience of Balogh and Roguenant, a series of blending sessions was conducted until they achieved a refined Burgundian elegance.
The 2000 Carpe Diem Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were released in Summer, 2002 and are available nationally. The suggested retail price for the Pinot Noir is $31 and the Chardonnay is priced at $26. The label is produced by Maisons Marques & Domaines which is located in Oakland, California. Maisons Marques & Domaines USA Inc. was founded in 1987 as the marketing company for Champagne Louis Roederer. The company is a niche-marketer of family-owned, prestigious producers from the world’s great wine regions.
