Reviews

Jeb Dunnuck 90 Points April 2024, Jeb Dunnuck

Lots of spicy, herbal, and earthy notes as well as solid red and black fruits emerge from the 2021 Château Bourgneuf, a medium-bodied, focused, foursquare, yet certainly charming Pomerol. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from gravelly, clay soils, it should be given 3-4 years to let the tannins round out then enjoyed over the following decade.

The Wine Advocate 91+ Points February 2024, William Kelley

The 2021 Bourgneuf has turned out better than I anticipated, and one senses its proximity to Trotanoy more clearly than was the case from barrel. Exhibiting aromas of sweet berries, cherries and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with good depth at the core, framed by sweet structuring tannins. While it will offer plenty of near-term appeal, don't discount its capacity to age.

Vinous Media 91 Points February 2024, Antonio Galloni

The 2021 Bourgneuf is a delicate, charming Pomerol. Crushed flowers, spice, red berry fruit and orange peel are all nicely lifted. This is an especially perfumed, mid-weight vintage for Bourgneuf, a wine that has been bigger in the recent past.

Decanter 92 Points March 2022, Georgina Hindle

Deep and heady nose, then so light, vibrant and sweet on the palate. Mouthwatering acidity with fruit just shy of being high-toned, the freshLy picked strawberry, raspberry leaf and blackcurrant all bouncy and to the fore, while the silky tannins gently give a frame that slowly expands and widens. Backbone and structure from the fruit, a driving sensation and sense of intent with a hint of wood and spice on the finish, just stopping short of being rustic. Appealing Pomerol character and style with a long life ahead.

Overview

Owned by the Vayron family since 1821, this lovely vineyard is situated in the heart of Pomerol’s most prestigious terroirs, with Château Trotanoy as its neighbor. Since 2008, the wine is made by the youngest Vayron to join the family venture, Frédérique, the daughter of current owners Xavier and Dominique.

Formed by a gentle, sloping plot, the west-facing vineyard enjoys ideal sun exposure, thanks to which some of its parcels were spared from the great frost of 1956.

Situated in one of the warmest parts of Pomerol, Château Bourgneuf produces wines that are deep and dense, layered and complex, with perfectly rounded tannins. The wine’s ripe fruit aromas make it seductive when young, but a few years of cellaring are strongly rewarded.

Château Bourgneuf is certified HVE 3.

Winemaking

The merlot and cabernet franc vines, of an average age of 40 years, are planted on gravelly clay enhanced by an iron-rich subsoil. The vineyard is maintained traditionally and conscientiously throughout the year. Vinification takes place in thermo-regulated concrete tanks, and aging is carried out in oak barrels (35% new) for 12-14 months.

Tasting Notes

Nose of ripe red fruit with slightly toasted evident oak. Very concentrated, powerful, warm palate marked by oak tannins.

Harvest Notes

The 2021 vintage demanded careful attention throughout the year, but the challenge united the vigneronnes and vignerons who produced, thanks to their efforts, a crop of good quality. Fastidious vineyard work, a gentle approach in the cellar, attention to detail and judicious decision-making were key in producing charming, delicate, elegant wines. The rainy and mild winter brought on an early and uneven budbreak, between March 24th and 27th. This early development put the young buds at great risk of a spring frost, such as the one that occured during the nights of the 6th and 7th of April, when temperatures dropped to -3 and -4°C. Candles and wind machines allowed us to gain 2°C and avoid serious damage.

Flowering unfolded very nicely at the end of May, but the heterogeneity from budbreak persisted. June and July were mostly gloomy with a few gorgeous hot and sunny episodes in the middle of each month. Veraison occurred slowly. August was dry and nearly caught up the summer’s lack of sunshine. Once veraison was complete, 70 people ‘compensated’ for nature’s deficiencies: almost 14,000 hours of vineyard work were dedicated to meticulous efforts (secondary shoot removal, leaf-plucking, green-harvest, grooming...). This work allowed us to achieve a homogenous crop of good quality.
