Reviews

The Wine Advocate 94 Points April 2026, Yohan Castaing

As anticipated, the 2023 Bourgneuf has turned out very well, revealing aromas of dark berries, dark cherries, incense and lilac. Medium- to full-bodied, it is seamless and layered, built around a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety, powdery tannins and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. The blend comprises 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

A classy 2023 Pomerol, the 2023 Château Bourgneuf offers ripe black cherries, melted chocolate, smoke, and roasted herbs on the nose. Based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and aged 12 months in 35% new French oak, it's medium-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with solid tannins, a nicely balanced, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15 years or so. Drink 2028-2043.

Vinous Media 92 Points March 2026, Antonio Galloni

The 2023 Bourgneuf is elegant and finessed, as it always is. Blood orange, pomegranate, sweet spice, mint and rose petal are all finely knit. Aeration brings out the wine's textural richness and resonance. This is beautifully done. Even so, the 2023 can lean into a richer style that I find less attractive than some of the more svelte wines of some prior vintages.

Decanter 92 Points January 2026, Georgina Hindle

Chewy and round, I love the soft plumpness you get here – the fruity, blackcurrant and chocolate tannins giving weight. Lovely purity of fruit and acidity, still a bit oak touched with tobacco, cigar, smoke and a bit chalk too. Fairly serious but still there’s finesse and structure. One to wait for.

JamesSuckling.com 94 Points December 2025, James Suckling

A juicy and savory red with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, chocolate and crushed stones. It’s medium-bodied with dusty, open-grained tannins and a savory finish. Drink after 2028.

Overview

Owned by the Vayron family since 1821, this lovely vineyard is situated in the heart of Pomerol’s most prestigious terroirs, with Château Trotanoy as its neighbor. Since 2008, the wine is made by the youngest Vayron to join the family venture, Frédérique, the daughter of current owners Xavier and Dominique.

Formed by a gentle, sloping plot, the west-facing vineyard enjoys ideal sun exposure, thanks to which some of its parcels were spared from the great frost of 1956.

Situated in one of the warmest parts of Pomerol, Château Bourgneuf produces wines that are deep and dense, layered and complex, with perfectly rounded tannins. The wine’s ripe fruit aromas make it seductive when young, but a few years of cellaring are strongly rewarded.

Château Bourgneuf is certified HVE 3.

Winemaking

The merlot and cabernet franc vines, of an average age of 40 years, are planted on gravelly clay enhanced by an iron-rich subsoil. The vineyard is maintained traditionally and conscientiously throughout the year. Vinification takes place in thermo-regulated concrete tanks, and aging is carried out in oak barrels (35% new) for 12-14 months.

Tasting Notes

Nose of ripe red fruit with slightly toasted evident oak. Very concentrated, powerful, warm palate marked by oak tannins.

Harvest Notes

After a generally mild and dry winter, punctuated by a few cold spells, a homogenous budbreak augured favorably for a promising harvest.

In April and May, stormy instability combined with above average seasonal temperatures increased the mildew pressure. However, thanks to the exemplary rapid response of the vineyard teams, these attacks were adeptly countered, saving the entire crop.During the flowering, a large quantity of pollen suggesting a harvest of remarkable amplitude.

The summer was unpredictable, with episodes in June of intense storms and high temperatures that were 3°C above the seasonal average. July was relatively cool, with light but frequent rainfall. The vines maintained their lead and véraison got under way.

August got off to a fairly cool start before tipping over to an intense heatwave from the 16th to the 24th, followed by a sudden drop in temperature. Hours of sunshine were below expectations, departing from the sunny character of recent vintages. In September, a heat wave struck again until the 11th, giving way to light rainfall, which encouraged full ripening.

The harvest took place under summer conditions from the 12th to the 27th of September.
