Reviews
Wine Spectator 91 Points
Modest in scale, but fresh and focused, with a pretty beam of cassis and blackberry fruit speckled with a savory edge. Ends with light floral and red tea notes, showing sneaky overall length too. Drink now through 2035.
JamesSuckling.com 93-94 Points
A medium-to full-bodied red with vibrant acidity and firm, fine tannins. Bright and polished with berries, walnuts, spices and dried flowers. Milk chocolate, too. Spicy and pretty finish.
Decanter 92 Points
Dark chocolate-laced wild berries on the nose, hints of fresh raspberries and touches of violet. This has a soft chew on the palate, the tannins giving a plumpness to the texture and giving the fruit a more pronounced, supple frame. This has a lovely refinement to it, the fruit has purity and a crystalline quality while there is depth on the mid-palate to go the long haul. Sleek yet layered with plenty of terroir markers in the soft chalkiness and graphite tone on the tongue. Everything feels in place with hints of Pomerol glamour and completeness. Great!
Overview
Situated on the northern edge of the plateau of Pomerol, nestled between Château Gazin and Château La Fleur-Pétrus, this wine has been produced by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix since 1976.
The vineyard (averaging 30 years of age), is planted on soils varying from gravel to clay to silt, allowing for a very elegant expression of Merlot. The vineyard management and vinification are carried out traditionally and with great care, producing a plump, supple, fleshy wine with ripe fruit and silky tannins.
Château Lafleur-Gazin is certificed HVE 3.
Winemaking
In thermoregulated concrete and stainless steel vats. Gentle and controlled maceration and extraction. 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 30-40% are new.
Tasting Notes
Eminently approachable, even in its youth, Lafleur-Gazin is a delightful expression of the lighter style of Pomerol wines.
Harvest Notes
The 2021 vintage demanded careful attention throughout the year, but the challenge united the vigneronnes and vignerons who produced, thanks to their efforts, a crop of good quality. Fastidious vineyard work, a gentle approach in the cellar, attention to detail and judicious decision-making were key in producing charming, delicate, elegant wines.
The rainy and mild winter brought on an early and uneven budbreak, between March 24th and 27th. This early development put the young buds at great risk of a spring frost, such as the one that occured during the nights of the 6th and 7th of April, when temperatures dropped to -3 and -4°C. Candles and wind machines allowed us to gain 2°C and avoid serious damage.
Flowering unfolded very nicely at the end of May, but the heterogeneity from budbreak persisted. June and July were mostly gloomy with a few gorgeous hot and sunny episodes in the middle of each month. Veraison occurred slowly. August was dry and nearly caught up the summer’s lack of sunshine. Once veraison was complete, 70 people compensated for nature’s deficiencies: almost 14,000 hours of vineyard work were dedicated to meticulous efforts (secondary shoot removal, leaf-plucking, green-harvest, grooming...). This work allowed us to achieve a homogenous crop of good quality.
Harvest took place from September 27th to 29th under favorable conditions, with optimal maturity reached on most parcels.
