Reviews

The Wine Advocate 93 Points April 2026, Yohan Castaing

The 2023 Lafleur-Gazin reveals aromas of baked dark berries, spices, licorice, clove and oak, followed by a medium- to full-bodied palate that is layered and enveloping, built around a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins. Finishing long and delicately oaked, this Merlot-only cuvée represents a strong effort.

Jeb Dunnuck 94 Points March 2026, Jeb Dunnuck

Based on 100% Merlot from 8.5 hectares of vines on gravelly, clay, and silt soils, the 2023 Château Lafleur-Gazin is a ripe, expressive Pomerol with loads of spicy red and black fruits, smoky tobacco, chocolate, and nicely integrated oak. It's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, nicely concentrated mouthfeel, supple tannins, and just a charming, balanced, pleasure-bent style that's already impossible to resist. Drink this complex, beautifully layered Pomerol over the coming 20 years or more. Drink 2026-2045.

Vinous Media 93 Points March 2026, Antonio Galloni

The 2023 Lafleur-Gazin is a very pretty, aromatic Pomerol. Crushed flowers, autumn leaves, sweet dried cherry and tobacco are all very nicely lifted. Floral and minty overtones carry the mid-palate and finish. This gracious, mid-weight Pomerol is all charm.

Decanter 94 Points January 2026, Georgina Hindle

Dark and oak tinged nose. Cool and fresh, yummy but quite underrated with a serious tone - crisp fruit, not overly acidic with firm tannins and a cool, fresh undercurrent. Feels sleek and elegant, with a mouthwatering core but quite a structured frame overall. A dark horse this one.

Aromas of milk chocolate, blackberries and plums with hints of thyme and vanilla. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, showing a fleshy core of elegant dark fruit framed by round, velvety tannins. Lustrous and linear, with a soft, polished texture. 100% merlot, aged for 12 months in 50% new oak. Drink or hold.

Overview

Situated on the northern edge of the plateau of Pomerol, nestled between Château Gazin and Château La Fleur-Pétrus, this wine has been produced by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix since 1976.

The vineyard (averaging 30 years of age), is planted on soils varying from gravel to clay to silt, allowing for a very elegant expression of Merlot. The vineyard management and vinification are carried out traditionally and with great care, producing a plump, supple, fleshy wine with ripe fruit and silky tannins.

Château Lafleur-Gazin is certificed HVE 3.

Winemaking

In thermoregulated concrete and stainless steel vats. Gentle and controlled maceration and extraction. 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 30-40% are new.

Tasting Notes

Eminently approachable, even in its youth, Lafleur-Gazin is a delightful expression of the lighter style of Pomerol wines.

Harvest Notes

After a generally mild and dry winter, punctuated by a few cold spells, the first leaves appeared on the vines on the 31th of March, which falls in line with the past ten years. A homogenous budbreak augured favorably for a promising harvest. In April and May, stormy instability combined with above average seasonal temperatures increased the mildew pressure. However, thanks to the exemplary rapid response of our vineyard teams, these attacks were adeptly countered, saving our entire crop.

Flowering started early on the 23rd of May, with large quantities of pollen suggesting a harvest of remarkable amplitude.

The summer was unpredictable, with episodes in June of intense storms and high temperatures that were 3°C above the seasonal average. July was relatively cool, with light but frequent rainfall. The vines maintained their lead and véraison got under way, with the first couloured berries appearing on the 17th of July.

Green harvesting and meticulous grooming significantly reduced yields to foster ripening and uniformity of the crop.

August got off to a fairly cool start before tipping over to an intense heatwave from the 16th to the 24th, followed by a sudden drop in temperature. Hours of sunshine were below expectations, departing from the sunny character of recent vintages. In September, a heat wave struck again until the 11th, giving way to light rainfall, which encouraged full ripening.

The harvest took place under summer conditions from the 7th to the 19th of September.
