View From the Cellar 90 Points August 2022, John Gilman

“Domaine Marc Brédif is best-known for its excellent examples of Vouvray (a 1921 Marc Brédif Vouvray remains one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted in my lifetime!), but they have made excellent Chinon for many years. The wine is made from vineyards principally planted on gravelly soils and it is fermented and raised in stainless steel tank. The 2020 is another excellent young wine, coming in at thirteen percent octane and delivering a complex nose of red and black cherries, tobacco leaf, a touch of tree bark, juniper berry, cigar smoke and gravelly soil. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a fine core of fruit, suave tannins, lovely balance and grip and a long, complex and very classy finish. This is made in a style that grants immediate access to the wine, but it has a good structural undercarriage and impeccable balance and will age quite gracefully. For my palate, I would be inclined to tuck it away in the cellar for three to five years and really let it blossom. It is a very good wine and a great value!”

Overview

Marc Brédif is owned and operated by the Baron de Ladoucette. The key to any de Ladoucette wine is quality in the vineyard, the winery and the bottle. The Baron de Ladoucette is dedicated to maintaining exceptionally high standards throughout his portfolio. The wines are made in the state-of-the art winery within the landmark Château du Nozet and are considered to be some of the finest examples of their type.

The grapes for the Marc Brédif Chinon grow in the northern part of the Chinon area, in Savigny-en-Véron. The vineyards are principally gravelly and have mostly north and south sun exposure.

Winemaking

De-stalked. Fermentation lasts 15 days on skins with pumping-over twice a day. Pressing and final fermentation of clear juice. Transferred to vats for malolactic fermentation. Maturing in stainless-steel tanks with regular racking.

Tasting Notes

This bright ruby red wine has intense, refined and fruity aromas. There are nuances of cherry, strawberry and spicy notes. In the mouth, it has a subtle attack and a fruity, light structure. There is a fresh and aromatic finish.
