“Harmonious and focused, this refined red sports lots of freshness, with currant and cherry flavors flanked with cedar, anise, orange peel and mineral details. Drink now through 2026.”

“Dark, bright-rimmed garnet. Aromas of dried cherry, red currant, potpourri, vanilla and incense; a smoky nuance builds in the glass. Sweet, energetic and focused on the palate, offering cherry and red berry compote and rose pastille flavors that deepen and pick up a musky chewing tobacco nuance on the back half. Delivers a compelling of power and finesse and finishes smoky and gently tannic, with strong persistence and lingering oak spice, cherry and floral notes.”

“The 2014 Gran Reserva Limited Edition, a barrel selection from the Reserva, is a blend of the more age-worthy wines. It's made up of 84% Tempranillo with 9% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, all from their 300 hectares of estate vineyards. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented by plot and variety in stainless steel, and the varieties were kept separate throughout the 25 months of élevage in American barriques. When discussing the latest vintages, the 2014 is very curious: the harvest was truly challenging, with lots of rain, ripeness problems and botrytis; so, in principle, it didn't look like a good vintage, and they decided not to keep the red Castillo Ygay. But now, seeing the evolution of this wine, they are kicking themselves. The wine has a clear classical profile, with developed aromas of autumn forest, truffle, smoked cured meat, cigar ash and sweet spices. It's sleek and polished, with resolved, fine-grained tannins and a dry, serious finish. This is surprisingly good and should evolve nicely in bottle.”

“Really attractive floral aromas to the dark fruit, mushrooms and light chocolate. Full-bodied with lightly chewy tannins and lots of flavors of ripe fruit, spice, walnut, seaweed and cedar. Long and caressing. This is still youthful now, but promising so much for the future. Try after 2022.”

Overview

Marqués de Murrieta Reserva is a traditional Rioja wine crafted in the classic Murrieta signature style and enjoying all the benefits of modern winemaking philosophy, equipment and techniques. Made from Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, this wine embodies ripe fruit qualities with a perfect balance of acidity, supple roundness on the palate and a hint of new oak. The Marqués de Murrieta vineyards on the 741-acre Ygay Estate are located in Rioja Alta between 320 meters to 485 meters above sea level.

The Cebrián-Sagarriga family, who in 1983 acquired the winery, established in 1852, has a distinct winemaking philosophy that is founded in the pursuit of quality and excellence through tradition and innovation.

Winemaking

Grapes are first de-stemmed and then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 8 to 12 days, with constant skin contact. During fermentation pumping over and punching down operations are regularly carried out. These processes ensure both effective and gentle color and aroma extraction. Afterwards the solid parts of the grapes are squashed in a vertical press. This is a gentle process that extracts color and ripe tannins from the grapes skin.

Food Pairing

Pairs beautifully with duck magret baked with red wine reduction, redcurrants, raspberries and honey mustard. Decanting the wine for 30 minutes is recommended. Best enjoyed between 60º to 63ºF.
