“In 1974, Ramos Pinto purchased this property in the far-eastern Douro Superior, where João Nicolau de Almeida researched what would become the five recommended varieties for planting in the Douro. Four of those varieties—touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz and tinta barroca—produce this single-quinta Tawny, a wine that shows the arid heat of the region in its notes of figs and pear liqueur. With its tart apple acidity and walnut-like tannins providing focus and structure, it’s a clean and simple pleasure for a cheese plate.”

“Bom Retiro is Ramos Pinto’s historic home on the south bank of the Douro, just downstream from Pinhão. Its steep, terraced hills rising high above the river grow the fruit for this Tawny: touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinta barroca and tinto cão. Aged into a dark, rich wine at the cusp of maturity, the fruit still bristles with energy, hinting at fresh figs and oranges, while mature tones lend the velvet texture of plums baked to perfection. The flavors last, with a spicy zing of acidity deliciously integrated into the fruit. Classical.”
