Wine Spectator 91 Points May 2025, James Molesworth

Gently steeped raspberry and black cherry fruit shows density and grip, with light anise, black tea and savory notes adding energy through the lightly toasted, slightly dusty finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2036.

Ripe, plummy nose with hints of baked cherries, iron and herbs. Medium body with juicy red fruit and a firm, medium-long finish. Still tight. Give it another two years in the bottle. Drink from 2027.

Red and black fruits, savory flowers, spice, and menthol notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Sales, a pure, seamless, very pretty, elegant wine from this team, a medium-bodied, round, supple, elegant Pomerol that will need to be drunk over the coming decade.

Decanter 94 Points January 2025, Georgina Hindle

Sweet strawberries and vanilla cream on the nose - smells very inviting. Smooth and easy on the palate, refined and delicate almost with the focus on bright red berry fruit, clean minerality and super fine tannins. A restrained take on the vintage with so much finesse and joy on offer. A full mouthfeel with a chalky, liquorice-laden finish hinting at the real power being covered up by the acidity and tangy fruit right now. Great ageing potential.

The 2022 Château de Sales was tasted from a sample sent to the UK following my visit to Bordeaux. Based on this sample, it is the best primeur showing that I have encountered from the largest estate in Pomerol. Quite plush with crushed strawberry and black plum on the nose, it becomes floral with time. Iris and violet petal aromatics seem fuller and ampler than recent previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame black plummy fruit laced with black truffle and cracked black pepper. While not as complex as those Pomerol château blessed with terroirs on the gravel plateau, this is a well-balanced, fruit-driven, sensual Château de Sales that should drink well after four to six years.

Overview

Built in the 17th century, Château de Sales is largest estate in the Pomerol appellation on the Right Bank. The château possesses exceptional beauty and elegance, and the same is true for its wines as they are the true expression of the Pomerol terroir from which they orginate. Located in the northwest corner of Pomerol, it is the only true château building in the appellation and has been owned by the same family for more than five hundred years.

The soils of Château de Sales are comprised of fine gravel and sand, with clay in some areas and an omnipresence of iron oxide, known locally as "crasse de fer". The vineyard of Château de Sales has a surface area of over 200 acres, with vines covering 116 acres. The vines are an average of more than 30 years old.

Winemaking

After de-stemming and crushing, alcoholic fermentation takes place in concrete tanks equipped with temperature regulation. The wine is then aged for 12-18 months in French oak barrels, of which only one third are new, in order to avoid any aggressive wood flavors and to preserve the brightness of the fruit.

Tasting Notes

A beautiful glittering crimson, the wine has a complex and seductive nose on aromas of black fruit, especially black cherry, violet and vanilla. Richly flavored and remarkably well-balanced, it opens with notes of black fruit and subtle spice which fill out on an ample and complex mid-palate sustained by the caress of refined, silky tannins, leading into a long and elegant finish.

Harvest Notes

The 2022 vintage started with a mild and dry winter. Late budbreak (March 29th for the Merlot vines and April 15th for the Cabernet Sauvignon) meant that spring frost on April 2-3 had little effect on the Château de Sales vineyard. Flowering took place rapidly and in good conditions, with warm and dry weather, 10 days earlier than the average for the last 10 years. The summer was exceptionally hot and dry: temperatures in August were 2°C higher than the average for the last 10 years, though the Château de Sales terroir helped to confine water stress to just a few parcels. Veraison also occurred rapidly and early, with the Merlot vines reaching mid-veraison on July 25th. Picking took place over 12 days between September 7-21. Thanks to meticulous work in the vineyard throughout the year, each variety could be harvested at optimum maturity. The quality of the crop heralds an exceptional vintage.
