Vinous Media 99 Points April 2026, Joaquín Hidalgo

After the wine was not produced in 2013, 2014 and 2015, the 2016 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial returns as a statement of precision and poise. The Tempranillo was aged for 31 months in American oak and the Mazuelo in French oak, followed by six months in oak vats, 12 months in concrete and bottle-aging since January 2021. It reads beautifully today, with élevage-driven aromatics that move from sandalwood and fine oak to soft toffee, while the fruit sits perfectly inside the frame—fresh plum, a trace of sour cherry and gentle notes of mint, lavender and menthol, plus a hint of sweet cinnamon. The wine feels packed with tertiary precursors. Dry, taut and delicate, it combines chalky nuance with a fine, gripping thread that shapes the palate. What lingers is the silk-like texture, bringing refreshing energy and sharply defined detail. Long, very long, it leans toward the ethereal: more perfume than wine. Like Alice’s rabbit hole, it draws you in, and then the experience shifts into another world.

The Wine Advocate 99 Points March 2025, Luis Gutiérrez

It's super harmonious and elegant, still young and only showing the beginning of those tertiary notes that define the Gran Reserva style of this wine. It's a textbook example of this wine, with notes of forest floor and truffles, a touch of iodine, spices, smoke and toast, keeping the core of ripe berry fruit, herbs and decayed flowers. It has a medium- to full-bodied palate with very fine tannins, polished and sleek but still young and lively. It shows the new direction of more elegance and freshness. It's approachable now and will age very nicely in bottle and for a long time. It's terrific! I think this is the finest vintage of Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial produced since the family bought the winery in 1983. A total of 134,125 bottles, 8,988 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in January 2021 and should be released at the end of 2026. The following vintages of this iconic label will be 2017, 2019 and 2021 ... and perhaps 2025.

Overview

The Cebrián-Sagarriga family, who in 1983 acquired the Marqués de Murrieta winery, established in 1852, has a distinct winemaking philosophy that is founded in the pursuit of quality and excellence through tradition and innovation.

Only the finest vintages from the 741-acre Ygay Estate are used to make Castillo Ygay. This Gran Reserva Especial is made from tempranillo and mazuelo from vineyards located at 485 meters above sea level. Limited in production and sought after all over the world, it is the worthy choice for the winery's emblematic Castillo Ygay label.

Winemaking

Grapes are de-stemmed after going through a selection table. The grape varieties ferment separately in stainless steel tanks, with controlled temperature. The alcoholic fermentation lasts 10-12 days approx. making regularly pumping over and delestage operations to favor the contact of the must with the skins and extract slowly the aromas and the phenolic compounds.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, balsamic and aromatic notes blend with black cherry and elegant hints of clove and cedar. Fullbodied on the palate, with bold breadth and dominant freshness. Harmonious in nature and with an enduring character

Harvest Notes

The grapes are manually harvested from an 80-year-old single-vineyard called La Plana, located at the highest peak within the Ygay Estate which surrounds the winery in the southern point of the Rioja Alta wine subzone. A manually selected harvest is done in small crates to keep the perfect conditions of the grapes. Tempranillo was harvested on October 10 to 20 and mazuelo on October 16 to 17 of 2016.

Food Pairing

Pairs beautifully with wood pigeon braised in red wine, cocoa, black pepper and Iberian ham fat; wagyu sirloin tartare, capers jam and soufflé potatoes; pil pil hake cheeks, codfish crispy skin and candied crystal pepper; Moliterno cheese with black truffles, sour cherry jam and Castillo Ygay red wine. Decanting the wine for 20 minutes is recommended. Best enjoyed between 64º- 66ºF.
