“This is really fine on the palate with wonderfully integrated tannins that give tension and focus. It’s medium-bodied with lovely berry, cherry, cedar and spice. Peaches and flower stems, too. Creamy texture. Extremely long and vivid. Structured, but showing beautiful drinkability with wonderful balance and form. One to drink or hold.”

Here's a new surprise from Castiglion del Bosco. Made with a selection of fruit from a 20-hectare vineyard with rich clay soils, the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino Gauggiole is quite soft and silky from the start. The wine offers a delicate ensemble of wild berry, cherry, blue flower and white pepper. Pretty background tones of crushed limestone and iron ore give the wine a sense of place. In all, this is an elegant expression that underlines the true personality of young Sangiovese. I'd drink this wine over many of the heavier Brunellos out on the market today. Production is 25,000 bottles.

Lustrous ruby. Gorgeous deep nose with fantastic focus. Succulent fruit, suave and elegant but with a tad more concentration than L’America and with rich coating tannins.

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino Gauggiole is a pretty and understated expression with wild strawberries and peppery herbs forming its bouquet. It’s silky with a cool-toned personality as a staining of red berries and mineral tones slowly mount. This finishes classically dry with a sour citrus twang that nicely punctuates the expression. The Gauggiole hails from a single northeastern vineyard within the Castiglion del Bosco property. It’s all refined in concrete vats.

“This red reveals both power and finesse, with intense aromas of truffle, black currant, violet and iron leading off, backed by saturated dark berry fruit, floral, leather and tobacco flavors. Big, muscular tannins grab hold of the finish, with ample fruit in reserve. Best from 2026 through 2045.”
