Wine Spectator 91 Points April 2026, James Molesworth

Fresh and enticing, with a steady beam of plum and black cherry compote flavors, lending this a generous feel. Liberally gilded with violet and ink on the finish and kept grounded with a twinge of iron at the tail end. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035.

The Wine Advocate 92 Points April 2026, William Kelley

A forward, charming wine that retains plenty of the estate's signature, the 2023 Resèrve de la Comtesse bursts with notes of sweet blackberries, cassis, burning embers and anise. Medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and supple, with a soft, giving profile, this will offer a broad drinking window.

Based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot and aged in 50% new French oak, the 2023 Pichon Comtesse Réserve is a beautiful second wine offering darker currants, fresh black cherries, smoky tobacco, and spicy wood aromatics. It's medium-bodied and has a pure, layered, balanced mouthfeel, ripe, present tannins, and outstanding length. Drink this over the coming 15+ years. Drink 2026-2041.

Vinous Media 93 Points March 2026, Antonio Galloni

The 2023 Réserve de la Comtesse is superb. In some recent vintages, I have felt the Réserve was a bit too serious for a second wine. That is not at all the case with the 2023, a wine of sublime elegance and finesse. Floral top notes meld into a core of dark red/purplish fruit, pomegranate, blood orange and cinnamon. This is the Réserve with the highest amount of Cabernet Sauvignon ever.

Extremely perfumed aromas of blueberries, currants and sandalwood follow through to a medium body with fine tannins that give length and energy. Very attractive to drink now, but tension at the end necessitating two or three years of bottle age. Drink or hold.

Decanter 93 Points April 2024, Georgina Hindle

Deep nose - lush, ripe fruit, chocolate, blackcurrants, smells sumptuous and rich but still with an element of graphite and cool minerality on the nose. Streamlined and well defined, lovely energy and focus and all in balance. Fruity with high acidity but not too sharp, not too angular. You can feel the power underneath and the minerality on top but it’s got good movement. Not so long, but it’s finessed and really easy to approach. If anything it’s a bit quiet right now, subtle and elegant, though this has structure and some firmness. Good quality. 12% press wine. Ageing 12 months, 50% new oak and 50% one year. 5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.

Overview

The second growth of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the Réserve de la Comtesse, was created and sold for the first time in 1973. Second growths represent between 20 percent and 50 percent of the total production of the Château. From the same soil, the second growth benefits from the technology and reputation of the great wine. The archives kept at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande mention the existence of a second wine as early as the 19th century.

The vast majority of the vineyards are Gunzian gravel mounds of the classic Pauillac composition, with the deep bed of gravel placed over a substrata of clay and limestone. The commitment to sustainable farming practices extends throughout the 220 acres of vineyards, with over 27 acres fully converted to organic viticulture, and 37 acres farmed biodynamically.

Tasting Notes

The nose reveals a basket of red fruit aromas (redcurrant and wild strawberries) underpinned by sweet overtones of vanilla and accompanied by floral notes of iris. The palate is ethereal and powdery, revealing a floral and spicy elegance with hints of pepper. All in all, an incredibly lively, long-lasting and delicious wine with notes of cinnamon on the finish.

Harvest Notes

The winter was relatively mild, favouring rather early bud break in the first half of April. This period saw some very cold nights, particularly on 5 April, requiring us to take all the necessary steps to protect the vines from frost. The growing season was marked by regular rainy spells and a high threat of mildew. Thanks to a great deal of effort and the fact that rainfall was scattered a few days apart, the threat of vine diseases remained under control, allowing flowering to unfold in late May and veraison (colour change) in early August. Despite the impression of a gloomy spring and summer, with several cold and rainy spells, particularly between June and August, the growing season was one of the driest years in modern history. The harvest took place from 6 to 30 September 2023– virtually the same dates as the previous vintage. Excellent weather conditions during the harvest meant pickers could wait until the ideal time to harvest the grapes, according to the technological and phenolic ripeness achieved in each plot.
