The Pio Cesare 2021 Barolo draws fruit from various sites, and like the Barbaresco, you get an excellent portrait of the vintage with balanced acidity, firm tannins and bright primary fruit. There is energy and vitality in this pretty Barolo with dried cherry, iris and subtle dustings of iron ore or rust.

We are seeing some exciting Chardonnays from Piedmont in Northern Italy. The Pio Cesare 2022 Langhe Chardonnay Piodilei opens to pretty citrusy notes and ashy mineral tones. There is almond cream and spice at the back. The Piodilei paints an accurate portrait of the grape with a nice sense of creaminess.

A graceful white, bright and focused, with vibrant acidity enmeshed with a silky weave of baked pear, apricot, almond butter, lemon thyme and pastry flavors. This is long and fluid, with a fresh, mineral-driven finish. Pinot Bianco, Friulano and Sauvignon. Drink now through 2035.

Blackberries, cassis, leather, and graphite notes all define the 2022 Hermitage Domaine Des Tourettes, a perfumed, complex, classic expression of Hermitage. With medium to full-bodied richness, tons of sweet fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish, give it a few years. Drink 2026-2038.

Mostly from the Chassis region, with some from the northern part of the appellation, the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Les Launes is charming and upfront, with perfumed red fruit, lavender, bouquet garni, and spicy, floral nuances. It's medium-bodied, forward, has supple tannins, and a great finish. Drink 2025-2035.
