Vinous Media 90 Points January 2022, Antonio Galloni

The 2019 Loudenne Le Château is packed with blackberry jam, chocolate, licorice, dried herbs and cloves. This potent, exuberant Médoc Cru Bourgeois packs quite the punch. It's not exactly subtle, but I doubt that is the point. There is no shortage of exuberance here.

Currant and crushed-stone aromas with some tobacco, following through to a medium body with a solid core of fruit and tannins. Medium finish. A year or two will open it up. Try after 2023.

Overview

As often quoted in the Médoc, "There is no great vineyard which cannot see the river." As all the best Grands Crus from the Médoc area, Château Loudenne's vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir: two gravelly hills that slope gently down to the banks of the Gironde estuary, reflecting the sun rays, reducing the risk of frost and helping the grapes to ripen. This privileged terroir contributes to the unique complexity and finesse of Château Loudenne wines.

Château Loudenne also benefits from ocean breezes that create a favorable microclimate for the maturation of the grape: the flavor is concentrated through evaporation and mild humidity. The soil is predominantly clay and limestone.

2019 marks the first year of conversion to Organic Farming High Environmental Value (HVE) Certified at the highest level 3.

Winemaking

Thermoregulated stainless steel and concrete vats, followed by Small Butcher vertical press and a strict selection of press wines. Aged 12-16 months in French oak barrels originated from Bordeaux coopers.40% new oak. 20% in vats to express the Merlot fruit flavors.

Tasting Notes

Beautiful deep cherry red color. Powerful and fruity nose of red fruits (cherry, griotte) and blackcurrant with a hint of spices. As from the attack, the mouth is fullbodied with a lot of finesse. It shows a significant and complex aromatic power of red fruits and spices in the middle. The finish is long, fresh and expressive with toast flavors and powerful but velvety tannins.

Harvest Notes

Spring was cool and rainy. This weather was unfavourable to flowering with a significant flower abortion but fortunately no millerandage. The summer was hot and dry but the Loudenne terroir worked wonders by refreshing the atmosphere during the late June, early July heat wave period. The gravel and clay soils and two episodes of rain in late July and mid-August allowed the vines to withstand the drought. Subsequently Loudenne was not affected by the rains of early September, which allowed to harvest grapes in perfect sanitary condition. However, these circumstances have affected the yields but have allowed the production of small concentrated berries with thick skins.
