Black raspberries, cassis, violets, blood orange, incense, and pepper notes all emerge from the 2023 Côte Rôtie Seigneur De Maugiron, a barrel sample that's clearly a terrific wine in the making. It's medium to full-bodied, has a wonderfully pure, polished, elegant mouthfeel, just about perfect balance, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It's impeccably made.

A serious Cote-Rotie that’s currently quite closed, the black fruit aromas slowly expanding in the glass and gently pushing the graphite to one side. There’s interplay of fine, generous tannins and beautifully ripe fruit. I love that the texture of the tannins switches from silky on the front palate to firmer and more velvety in the finish. Needs time for the complexity to develop. This is the first vintage of this wine, and it matured primarily in large oak foudres. Best after 2026.

Overview

Born from the finest slopes of the appellation, the Seigneur de Maugiron cuvée gracefully embodies the purity and depth of Syrah. It offers a delicate, refined, and finely detailed interpretation of the mythical Côte-Rôtie terroir, where elegance and character unite in perfect balance. Ont he right bank of the Rhône, the Côte-Rôtie vineyard clings to vertiginous slopes sculpted by human hands for over two millenia. At altitudes ranging from 180 to 325 meters, these spectacular inclines, some reaching up to 60% gradient, offer a striking panorama over one of the oldest crus of the Rhône Valley. Nearly all the vines of Côte-Rôtie are planted on metamorphic rock, imparting a distinctive mineral and refined identity to the wines.

Winemaking

The harvest, carried out entirely by hand, is carefully placed in palox bins before being transferred to a cold room, in order to preserve the fruit's freshness and integrity. After destemming, the berries are moved by gravity into truncated stainless steel vats, with the utmost respect for the raw material. Aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 20% of which are new, the wine gains complexity and depth without masking the purity of the fruit. 3 months before bottling, it is blended in stainless steel tanks, in pursuit of harmony and balance.

Tasting Notes

The color is deep crimson. The powerful yet subtle nose of Côte-Rôtie "Seigneur de Maugiron" has blackcurrant, red currant, licorice and smoky aromas, underscored with light woody notes. The palate seduces with a structure with silky tannins, while the nose combines complexity and elegance, with aromas of black fruits, spices and sometimes violets.

Harvest Notes

Shaped by winter drought, the 2023 vintage benefited from a milder spring, which allowed the vines to better withstand the intense summer heat. Despite limited yields, the harvest, beginning in late August, resulted in healthy, high-quality grapes, promising balanced and expressive wines.

Food Pairing

This wine pairs well with veal rump with morels and ground roasted coffee.
