The Wine Advocate 91 Points
The 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Les Launes is composed of around 80% fruit from the alluvial plains, complemented by grapes from Gervans and Larnage on granitic soils, and was matured partly in used barrels (around 20%). It opens with a bright bouquet of dark fruits and violet, offering a fresh and floral aromatic profile with notes of mulberry. Medium-bodied, juicy and elegant, it’s gourmand and immediately appealing, though not especially deep. More tense and structured on the palate than the nose suggests, it remains straight and well-defined, concluding with an ethereal finish.
Overview
The appellation of Crozes-Hermitage is the largest in the northern Rhône valley, covering nearly 2,100 acres. The region consists of primarily syrah grapes that are aromatic, rich and full-bodied. Delas has been buying grapes from family growers in this region for over 100 years and produces Les Launes with fruit from the Chassis area, located in the northermost area of Crozes-Hermitage.
The soil varies from granite sub-soils in the north to both fluvioglacial alluviums and terraces of rolled river bed stones, mixed with loess in the south. The climate has a southerly exposure in the hillside areas.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested at perfect maturity, then fully destemmed to preserve the purity of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing for gentle and well-managed extraction. After draining off and pressing, malolactic fermentation is carried out in tank to bring roundness and balance. Depending on the profile of the vintage, a portion of the cuvée may be aged in barrels to refine the structure and enhance the wine’s aromatic complexity.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep garnet red color. It is fruity on the nose with strong aromas of cassis, plums and a touch of violets. The tannic structure is ample and well-rounded, which assures good aging potential.
Harvest Notes
Marked by a dry winter, the 2023 vintage benefited from a milder spring, which helped the vines better withstand the intense summer heat. Despite limited yields, the harvest, beginning in late August, delivered healthy, high-quality grapes, promising balanced and expressive wines.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs well with wild board prepared Bourguignon-style.
