Lots of crushed rock character with white grapefruit, lime pith, chamomile and oranges. It’s powerful, driven and pure, full-bodied and sensationally minerally. Salty undertones. Long and very deep. Just beginning to open up. Drink or hold.

The Wine Advocate 94 Points March 2024, Stephan Reinhardt

The 2019 Riesling Grand Cru Kitterlé is clear, deep and refined on the elegant and intense nose that intertwines very fine Riesling aromas with the terrific terroir notes of this terraced 29-hectare cru on volcanic sandstone soils. Thew fruit is very well defined and intertwined with discreet notes of ashes. It is finessed yet also dense and complex on the palate, with a long, intense and mineral finish but also the richness and sweetness of the vintage. This is an extraordinary Kitterlé with a long, enormously saline and finely tannic finish. This is another impressive 2019 Riesling from Schlumberger in Guebwiller, southern Alsace. It is savory and, in a very positive way, astringent on the finish. This is still terribly young but enjoyable and worth cellaring for about a decade and longer. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in March 2024.

Wine Enthusiast 92 Points November 2022, Layla Schlack

Saline scents are balanced by ripe white nectarine and that signature petrol aroma. The wine is bright and fresh, with dry, crisp summer stone fruits hemmed in by bracing acidity and savory petrol qualities. A bit of white pepper comes through on the medium-length finish, making for a wine that's overall fun to drink and easy to like.

Overview

With a single holding of more than 330 acres at Guebwiller, Domaines Schlumberger is the largest Grands Crus producer in Alsace. All Schlumberger wines are estate-grown. Seventy-five percent of the vines are planted on very steep, terraced slopes, requiring horses be used for fieldwork.

The outstanding quality of the wines is due largely to Schlumberger’s superior vineyards, but also because yields are deliberately kept low. The winery produces only 80,000 cases annually, while the law allows for up to 160,000.

First distinguished in 1699, Kitterlé has always had an exceptional reputation. Already protected in the Middle Ages, it has been sold under its own name since 1830.

Winemaking

The grapes are handpicked and whole bunches are pressed. There is static settling of the lees. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled tuns, followed by raising on the less for 8 months.

Tasting Notes

The colour yellow with light green reflections, of good intensity. The disc is bright, limpid and transparent. The wine presents youth. The nose is frank, pleasant and intense. We perceive a dominant citrus scent, yuzu zest, lemon, white flowers and a fine smoky, flinty touch. Airing amplifies these smells and reveals the fine vegetal, lemongrass and spices, ginger. The nose reflects a perfect state of health of the grapes. The profile of the terroir will gain in typicity over time. The attack on the palate is dense, fleshy. The alcohol base is full-bodied. We evolve on an incisive environment, marked by a pearling environment. We find the range of aromas of the nose, always focused on fine vegetal, lemongrass, white flowers, citrus fruits, yuzu zest, lemon, spices, and ginger and, in filigree, this fine mineral note from gunflint. We feel a slight bitterness. The finish has a great length, 10-11 caudalies, as well as a frank liveliness and a lingering fine bitterness. The balance is digestible and refined. It expresses the temperament of the land with elegance and delicacy.

Food Pairing

Do not hesitate to pair it with fresh anchovies marinated in lemon, skate fins in a salad, grilled Brittany lobster on the plancha or a goat's milk cheese, such as Selles sur Cher. Serving temperature 12°.
