“Barolo Chinato is my favorite digestif after a filling dinner in Piemonte; it is Barolo infused with china bark and numerous herbs. Deep orange amber; aromas of nutmeg, rhubarb, cinnamon, orange peel and yes, tree bark. Medium-full (16% alcohol), this is very rich on the palate with flavors of ripe oranges and brown spice. Dry finish with distinct notes of brown herbs and subtle notes of cinnamon and sassafras.”

“Vermouth is a traditional spirit of Piemonte, and as of 2016 Pio Cesare has begun to produce Vermouth again; production had ceased in the 1950s. This is a classic Vermouth, one with notable complexity and finesse, not like the commercial examples from the large companies. Light amber; aromas of orange peel, apricot, dried honey and brown sugar. Medium-full (16% alcohol), this has an off-dry finish that is very delicate and lingering, with an elegant entry on the palate. Wonderful complexity! This is an excellent way to finish a hearty meal.”

“Lean and taut, showing macerated cherry, eucalyptus and iron flavors. It's ripe and the tannins are well-integrated. Just a bit shy on the finish today, but a year or two in the bottle should take care of that. Best from 2022 through 2036.”
