Vinous Media 91 Points
The 2023 2nd de Pez is a potent, boisterous wine. A blast of dark red/purplish fruit, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and mocha races across the palate. The 2023 packs a pretty serious punch. Technical Director Nicolas Glumineau conceives the 2nd as a bistro wine—it’s very nice for a bistro wine. This Merlot-based Saint-Estèphe hits all the right notes. Floral overtones extend the finish nicely.

A tight and solid second wine from Chateau Pez with berry, currant and cola aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins and a reserve finish. 64% merlot, 31% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot. Drink or hold.
Decanter 91 Points
Smells gorgeous like a box of fruity chocolates and strawberry juice. Sleek and easy, a lovely smooth texture and light weight to this with super bright acidity that doesn't stick out too much at all. Lean, a little powdery minerality on the finish which adds texture. Easy to enjoy with liquorice and graphite at the end. Well handled. 10.5% press wine. Ageing no new oak, only one or two year old barrels for 12 months.
Overview
Founded in the 15th century, Château de Pez is one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux’s Left Bank and the oldest domaine in Saint-Estèphe. Château de Pez consists of 104 continuous acres with 94 acres planted mainly to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Since 2005, Pez has been on an exciting intellectual and technical journey of precision winemaking: experimenting with biodynamic viticulture, a new cellar allowing for plot-by-plot vinification, a meticulous selection of French oak barrels. Under winemaker Nicolas Glumineau's helm, the property bears the distinctive hallmarks of Saint-Estèphe with a modern, elegant twist.
With more than 7 acres farmed under biodyamic practices and an estate-wide HVE Level 3 certification, Pez 2nd is produced sustainably from the young vines of Château de Pez.
Winemaking
Vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel (ranging from 90-120 hl) and wooden conical vats (180 hl). The vat best suited to the size of the plot is chosen. Aged for 12 months in 30% oak barrels (long medium heat) and 70% conical stainless steel vats.
Tasting Notes
The rich and delicious nose displays notes of red fruit (strawberry and cherry) with spicy overtones. The creamy, long palate is also very attractive, underpinned by ripe tannins. The fleshy Merlot smoothly coats the precisely structured Cabernet Sauvignon, a hallmark of the vintage.
Harvest Notes
The winter was relatively mild, favouring rather early bud break, from 9 to 13 April. It nevertheless occurred after a few very cold nights in early April, sparing us the need to protect the vines from frost. The growing season was marked by regular rainy spells and a high threat of mildew. Thanks to a great deal of effort and the fact that rainfall was scattered a few days apart, the threat of vine diseases remained under control, allowing flowering to unfold in late May and veraison (colour change) in early August. Despite the impression of a gloomy spring and summer, with several cold and rainy spells, particularly between June and August, the growing season was one of the driest years in modern history. The harvest took place from 7 to 28 September 2023– virtually the same dates as the previous vintage. Excellent weather conditions during the harvest meant pickers could wait until the ideal time to harvest the grapes, according to the technological and phenolic ripeness achieved in each plot.
