Wine Enthusiast 91 Points
“Forest, clove, oak and thick tannin make for a hearty entry into this perennially impressive vineyard-designate—one of the producer's earliest partnerships. Weighty and powerful, it offers forest floor, tea and wild strawberry, the acidity lasting and lively.”
The Wine Advocate 91+ Points
“Medium ruby-purple, the 2018 Pinot Noir Klopp Ranch offers aromas of cranberries, rhubarb and blackberries with notes of earth, tar and woodsmoke. The medium-bodied palate has pretty, earth-laced fruits with a grainy frame and uncomplicated finish. This feels youthfully mute and may open up with some more time in bottle. ”
Vinous Media 92 Points
“The 2018 Pinot Noir Klopp Ranch is a racy wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, cola, spice and blood orange all open up nicely in the glass. There is plenty of Russian River exuberance. The finish is a bit tight, but otherwise, this is very nicely done.”
Overview
Merry Edwards Winery was founded in 1997 and produces terroir-driven, single-vineyard wines from 80 acres of estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley. The winery is known for crafting Pinot Noirs of immense depth, elegant structure and exceptional longevity as well as its aromatic, barrel-aged Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc, which is among the most sought after made in California. A single-vineyard Chardonnay and Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc round out the portfolio.
Klopp Ranch lies in an area of Russian River Valley Merry called “The Golden Triangle.” This narrow expanse of land is blessed with moderate climate and excellent drainage provided by sandy Goldridge soils. Located northwest of the Santa Rosa Plain, on the eastern slope of Laguna Ridge, it overlooks the Laguna de Santa Rosa wintertime lake. Ted Klopp purchased his 37-acre property in 1982.
Tasting Notes
The approachable and inviting 2018 vintage perfectly illustrates the character of this wine. The nose brings scents of candied cherry, blood orange, cocoa powder, brown spice and floral notes. The palate is round and balanced on entry, with well-integrated French oak and bright acidity. The sustained finish is spicy and lively, with a hint of pomegranate and a touch of leather.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with garden fresh vegetables for a savory Fall stew. Yukon gold potatoes and Nantes carrots add intense flavor. The “stew” meat can be upgraded to a flat iron steak—the tenderness is totally worth it! Serve with a green salad and crusty French bread as a hearty meal to enjoy with the Klopp Ranch Pinot.
