The Pio Cesare family’s unique winemaking method stresses minimal intervention to produce wines of particularly supple flavor expression. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio Cesare's choices in the cellar: shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection for barrel and large cask aging, and bottling schedules determined by the ideal structure of each wine. This allows Pio Cesare to craft wines of varying weight, ageability and drinkability as determined by the vineyard rather than market fashion.

This Barbaresco is produced using the classic “formula” of traditional families: a wine which embraces and combines each of the unique characteristics of the different terroirs of the appellation, sourcing grapes from the family's multiple vineyards in different communes.

The grapes are sourced from four different vineyards in the Barbaresco region; in particular, the village of Treiso (Bricco di Treiso, San Stunet, and Bongiovanni) and in Alba (Rocche Massalupo). Fermentation and long maceration on the skins take place in stainless steel tanks before the meticulous blending of locations and the long ageing in big barrels of French and Eastern European oak for nearly 24 months and for a small amount in French oak barriques. The wine then undergoes long bottles ageing before release to increase drinkability. 

The harmonious fusion of multiple terroirs gives the possibility to catch the unique and diverse characters of Nebbiolo from different positions and exposures of this region and to represent them as a whole in a complete and balanced Barbaresco, following the Langhe tradition. Concentration of ripen and spicy fruits, round tannins, nice approachability, great structure and complexity. Extremely long ageing potential. Thanks to the meticulous work carried out by our team both in the vineyard and in the cellar, our 2022 Barolo and Barbaresco wines show excellent fruit concentration and freshness, firm yet refined tannins and well-defined structure. Barbaresco expresses more floral nuances, reflecting both the higher clay content of its soils and the slightly more abundant water reserve during the season.

Despite the early growing season and challenging climatic conditions, the 2022 harvest delivered outstanding quality, thanks to the rigorous agronomic practices carried out in our vineyards, the resilience of the Langhe terroir and the remarkable adaptability of Nebbiolo. 2022 harvest was short and intense, requiring vineyards from different terroirs—typically characterized by distinct ripening dynamics— to be picked within a very brief time window. Nebbiolo was harvested in our Barbaresco vineyards between September 21st and October 4th.
