Reviews
Wine & Spirits 89 Points
“A meaty ragù of black fruit and tobacco scents, this is smoky and unctuous, with energy to drive its gamey rusticity. For grilled lamb.”
Wine Spectator 89 Points
“Ripe and sleek, showing boysenberry and plum puree notes that glide through easily, with light anise and violet as well as a lightly toasted finish. Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Drink now through 2024.”
Overview
Duas Quintas embodies the precision, freshness and richness of the wines from this iconic Douro still wine producer. Duas Quintas Red is a wine from the region of Douro Superior, more specifically from Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta dos Bons Ares, and is a blend of traditional grape varieties that expresses the potential of this most extreme region.
Winemaking
Plot by plot, the grapes are tasted in the vineyard until the time is right for harvesting. Once in the winery, the grapes are crushed and destemmed and sent to different fermentation containers (granites lagares, big oak vats, concrete and stainless steel vats) by variety and plot. Our in-depth knowledge of our plots allows us to choose the most suitable vats and fermentation. The grapes are macerated for as long as is needed to obtain a wine with the desired body and structure. After malolactic fermentation, 20% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels, 30% in big oak vats and the remaining 50% stored in stainless steel vats for about 12 months. This wine was bottled between May and July 2020.
Tasting Notes
Dark red color, clean and bright. The nose reveals a concentration of fruit, fresh aromas of berries such as blackberries, strawberries and raspberries This is followed by fresh spices and warm, toasty aromas. In the mouth the fruit intensity and concentration are maintained. It finishes long and fresh, with soft tannins. Duas Quintas Tinto 2019 stands out for the perfect harmony between its concentration and vivacity.
Harvest Notes
The 2019 viticultural year was very dry. The temperatures recorded in the first months of 2019 were high and therefore advanced the vegetative cycle of the vineyard. Everything indicated an early harvest, but the mild temperatures of August and September prolonged this cycle and allowed continuous ripening with an ideal level of water stress. At Quinta dos Bons Ares, the early summer rains replenished the water levels in the soil for an optimum end of ripening grapes. The red grapes harvest started on August 28th at Quinta de Ervamoira and finished in early October at Quinta dos Bons Ares. The 2019 harvest was exceptional, the wines show perfect harmony in fruit, freshness, concentration and tannins.
Food Pairing
The elegance of the 2019 makes it a perfect match for a variety of dishes:grilled cod, vegetarian dishes and roast beef. It is also good with cured sheep's cheese.
