Reviews

Wine Spectator 93 Points November 2025, James Molesworth

Bramble and licorice snap notes lend good energy as a mix of boysenberry and blackberry puree and warmed fruitcake emerges steadily. A singed apple wood detail frames the finish, while underlying succulence lends freshness to help everything extend nicely. Best from 2038 through 2050.

Overview

Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 and, for several decades, its history has been marked by a balance between innovation and respect for tradition. In addition to producing wines of exceptional quality, the House is known for its knowledge of terroir and for its pioneering viticulture. Through its strict production policy, the selection of the best Douro grape varieties and the systematic technical and technological research, the House is positioned as the reference for the production of superior quality wines in Portugal.

Ramos Pinto has four estates in the Douro Valley: Quinta do Bom Retiro and Quinta da Urtiga, located in Cima Corgo, as well as Quinta dos Bons Ares and Quinta de Ervamoira, in the Douro Superior. These four Quintas cover an area of 890 acres. The grapes of Quinta de Ervamoira give structure, intensity of fruit and body to the vintage ports. However, it is in Quinta do Born Retiro and Quinta da Urtiga that these wines acquire complexity and elegance.

Committed to improving its bond with nature and the environment, Ramos Pinto is working towards this achievement by implementing organic farming and increasing biodiversity in the vineyard. This is a legacy which the House is proud to leave to future generations.

Quinta do Bom Retiro Vintage is a "single quinta" vintage port produced solely in exceptional years, After being carefully selected from the plots at Quinta do Bom Retiro. the grapes are fermented in granite lagares. This complex and delicate wine may be drunk young or when older, given its great ageing potential.

Winemaking

Crushed by foot in the lagar. This wine ferments for 4 to 5 days, producing an excellent extract.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby red with tinges of blue. The nose offers a core ofraspberry. cherry and black plum, highlighted by the elegance of floral and mineral aromas. violet petals, cedar and a note of talcum powder. Spices with fresh touches ofaniseed and cardamom emerge in the background. This is a Vintage with an elegant and delicate profile with very fine tannins. The typical freshness of Quinta do Bom Retiro and this year of 2023 lead to a harmonious, velvety and flavorful finish.

Harvest Notes

The growing cycle started early, driven by the ample water in the soil. following a rainy winter and high temperatures in early spring. Until the end of may, the weather was stable and dry. Early June brought over 80 mm of rainfall, in the form of heavy storms which despite their fleeting impact did little to increase the water reserves in the ground. July and August were extremely dry and hot, raising high hopes of a very promising year. The 2023 harvest at Quinta do Bom Retiro occurred between August 28th and September 22nd. It began in the iconic and centenary Vin ha do Rio, and the musts in the Iagares were vibrant in color and with intense aromas, promising a memorable year. As the harvest continued, expectations rose still further. Given the forecast ofweather instability. we brought forward the harvest of some plots of Touriga Francesa at the same time as Touriga Nacional. A faultless strategic decision that enabled the most iconic plots of Touriga Francesa at Ouinta do Bom Retiro to be harvested in optimum conditions.

Food Pairing

Pairs beautifully with cheeses such as Serra, Gorgonzola, Stilton and Cabrales. Best served between 62º and 70ºF.
