The 2021 Riesling Saering Grand Cru is grown on Jurassic limestone. The first mention of this site was in 1250. It was an island surrounded by an inland sea. At Schlumberger, Saering is made only from the part of the grand cru that was this island. The nose is subtle with lemon rind. The palate is concentrated and pervaded by bright, ripe lemony freshness. The body is slender but a picture of citrus freshness and brightness, in line with this cooler year, tingling almost like lemon sherbet but based on undeniable stoniness. (Bone-dry)

Let this wine open up a bit, and you'll be treated to an intense bouquet of slate, grapefruit, parsley and just a hint of bubblegum. It's both elegant and fun. The body is soft and plush, carrying a bit of those parsley and grapefruit-zest characteristics. A clean sweep comes in toward the end and makes for a clean, bright, albeit not terribly long finish.

“Greenish gold. Intense nose of maturing Riesling with real concentration. Lime juice and breadth. Dry finish but lots of richness on the way there. Real undertow. Drinking very well now. Food wine. This would be great with all sorts of cured meats, salami and hams. Very long and reverberant. I'd say underpriced.”

“Grassy chamomile aromas invite you in. Upon first sip, dazzling fruit notes of pear and grapefruit show great restraint, held in check by zingy acidity. The long finish offers soft, delicate notes of apricot, both fresh and something akin to a fruit snack.”

“Grassy and petrol fragrances all but bury hints of lychee and forest floor aromas. Sweet lychee and lemony acidity come to the forefront on the palate, balanced by green bell pepper and a tenacious back note of petrol. The finish is clean and bright. The pyrazines are unexpected but not unpleasant, aiding the acidity in making this sweet wine quite refreshing.”
