The 2019 Turpino, Querciabella's top wine from Maremma, is understated and yet quite expressive. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice and licorice are nicely lifted by a good dose of Cabernet Franc in the blend. This aromatic, layered red holds quite a bit of appeal. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years.

The 2019 Palafreno, 100% Merlot from Greve's Ruffoli district, is stunning, not to mention one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted here. Silky, plush and exceptionally vivid in the glass, the Palafreno possesses breathtaking beauty that captivates all the senses. At this early stage, the 2019 is all primary dark fruit, but the layers will start to open with cellaring. Readers who can find it should not hesitate. It's a real head turner.

This is very polished and structured with a finesse to the tannins which spread across the palate. It’s full-bodied with fine fruit and a driven finish. It needs three or four years to soften and open. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Try after 2025.

“The 2018 Camartina is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Dark, brooding and quite closed, the 2018 is going to require cellaring and a good bit of patience, too. Dark-fleshed fruit, leather, spice, menthol and grilled herbs emerge with some coaxing. The Cabernet is quite evident in both the flavor profile and overall structure, which likely explains the wine's general feel today.”

“Sangiovese from estate-owned vineyards in Greve, Gaiole and Radda forms the basis for this lively wine. Its red-cherry and cranberry flavors are tangy and fresh, tinged with hints of orange peel and framed by taut, raspy tannins that make it an excellent partner at the dinner table. As with all of Querciabella’s wines since 2010, it is vegan-friendly.”
