Wine Spectator 95 Points, 95
Well-formed, with a solid core of cassis, plum reduction and blackberry compote notes that stretch out slowly, supported by wood spice, dried anise and apple wood accents along the way. A late tug of warm earth and sweet tobacco adds depth and length. Captures the exotic edge of the vintage without losing focus -- no easy feat. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2038.

So aromatic and fresh with black olives, black truffles, gravel and dried flowers. Milk chocolate. Ovaltine. Full-bodied with fantastic old-vine tannins. Layered and very structured. Goes deep and down. One for the cellar. Superb. Maybe the best ever. 80% merlot and the rest cabernet franc. Needs ten years here.

Lively on the nose, so expressive but in a lifted bright and lively way, not so dark and brooding more 'look how pretty I am right now'. Floral and dark fruit - blackcurrant, plum, red cherry, powerful but poised too, this has elegance and charisma form the start, bright acidity gives a slightly strict frame but the fruit, tannis, acidity, oak handling are supremely good. Feels so beautiful, a touch shy, with liquorice edges and some dark chocolate elements. Supremely easy to like and see the star quality here. It’s intense and concentrated but shimmers and shines in the glass. The purity is exceptional and I love the balance and length. Detailed and well designed - what a wine!

The 2020 Hosanna is a sumptuous Pomerol, as it always is. Blueberry jam, crème de cassis, lavender, cloves and sweet new oak are all amplified in a dramatic, opulent wine that shows the more flamboyant side of Pomerol. Always, Hosanna is a wine of great individuality and character, but it is also less complete than the best wines in the Moueix stable. It's always a soloist, never an orchestra to me.
Overview
Château Hosanna, a jewel-like vineyard of just 4,5 hectares, is located in the heart of Pomerol’s central plateau, adjacent to some of the most illustrious crus of the appellation: Château Lafleur to the north; Château Petrus to the east; Château La Fleur-Pétrus to the west; Vieux Château Certan to the south.
The vineyard of Château Hosanna has a long and rich history. Prior to its purchase by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1999, Hosanna was known as Château Certan Giraud, considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol since the 1950’s. It was originally part of the de May family estate, who settled on Pomerol’s plateau in the 16th century and planted one of the appellation’s first vineyards there.
Only the highest plateau parcels of its previous incarnation were selected to form Château Hosanna. The vineyard enjoys a terroir of red gravel and clay on "crasse de fer" which is known for producing wines of great elegance, complexity, and power. Old Cabernet Franc vines, a significant portion of which date back to 1956, contribute a unique complexity to the cru.
A marriage of intensity, purity and balance, its silky touch has led some to describe Hosanna as the feminine counterpart to Trotanoy.
Tasting Notes
Château Hosanna 2019 opens on notes of honeyed tobacco, cedar and coffee bean. On the palate, the dense tannins are already silky, the finish long and complex.
Harvest Notes
The winter of 2019-2020 was the warmest in France since the beginning of the 20th century. It followed a very wet fall that replenished soil water reserves. January and February 2020 were exceptionally warm and dry, bringing on an early budbreak (from March 22nd). Spring was warm and rainy, with precipitations that were significantly above average. Flowering took place very early, from May 12th to the 22nd. Fruit set was even and abundant, portending good yields. Green harvesting and precise grooming of the vines in the early summer allowed us to rectify the irregularities of the budbreak and even out the yields.
Summer was exceptionally hot and dry with virtually no rainfall in July. We adjusted our farming methods accordingly. The deep clay and gravel of Château Hosanna allowed the vines to draw on the water reserves accumulated over winter and thus not suffer from the drought conditions. Veraison took place from July 14th to 29th. Welcome rain in mid-August ensured the grapes were able to reach full maturity. From the end of August, cool nights allowed the accumulation of sugar and anthocyanines in the berries to resume while preventing the deterioration of acids. The weather in September allowed for a serene harvest from the 17th to the 20th.
