Wine Enthusiast 96 Points December 2026, John Sumners

The Ervamoira really shines in 2024, with stunning focused acidity, superb purity, and a finish that goes on and on. Roasted blackberry, dried cherries, and cassis are framed by violets/roses, graphite, tobacco/tea, leather, and baking chocolate scents, all topped by a pop of peppery spice. Gorgeously seductive already, it'll be a refined heartbreaker from the late 2030s.

Overview

Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 and, for several decades, its history has been marked by a balance between innovation and respect for tradition. In addition to producing wines of exceptional quality, the House is known for its knowledge of terroir and for its pioneering viticulture. Through its strict production policy, the selection of the best Douro grape varieties and the systematic technical and technological research, the House is positioned as the reference for the production of superior quality wines in Portugal.

Committed to improving its bond with nature and the environment, Ramos Pinto is working towards this achievement by implementing organic farming and increasing biodiversity in the vineyard. This is a legacy which the House is proud to leave to future generations.

Quinta de Ervamoira, located in the Douro Superior on the left bank of the River Douro and in the heart of the Côa Archaeological Park, is Ramos Pinto's most historical and well-preserved vineyard site. Today, 240 acres of vines are planted vertically, a departure from the traditional horizontally terraced rows, which allows for less fruit per plant but more concentrated fruit flavors.

Vintage Quinta de Ervamoira is a single-quinta Port that is only released in exceptional years. Crafted from the estate’s finest vineyard plots, this Vintage expresses the pure identity of the Douro Superior, combining intensity, precision and elegance. Vintage 2024 marks two important milestones: the 50th anniversary of Quinta da Ervamoira and the 30th anniversary of the first release of this emblematic Single Quinta Vintage.

Winemaking

Vinified exclusively from the finest vineyard plots of Quinta da Ervamoira, this Vintage was foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares, respecting the heritage and identity of the Douro Superior. Fermentation, lasting approximately four to five days, was carried out with precision and care, favouring a delicate and selective extraction. This method preserved the wine’s natural freshness, aromatic definition and elegant texture, resulting in a Vintage of great purity, balance and expression of terroir.

Tasting Notes

Deep red in colour, opaque at the core, with bright crimson reflections at the rim. From the very first moment, the nose reveals great purity and aromatic brightness. Wild red fruits (raspberry, redcurrant and acerola cherry) combine with deeper notes of black plum. Exotic hints of lychee lift the profile, interwoven with rockrose, wild herbs and mint. On the palate, the attack is vibrant and precise, with crystalline fruit and remarkable freshness. The mid-palate shows elegant tension and fluidity, leading to a long, pure and ethereal finish that highlights the elegance and ageing potential of this Vintage.

Harvest Notes

At Ervamoira, 2024 brought very balanced conditions, with a stable spring and a warm summer marked by cool nights. This balance allowed for even ripening, resulting in grapes with intense colour, precise aromas and remarkably fresh acidity for the region. Harvest began early and progressed meticulously, variety by variety, making the most of small picking windows. The Tourigas stood out for their expressiveness, while Tinto Cão and Tinta Barroca contributed perfume, texture and balance.

Food Pairing

Ideal after a meal, it pairs beautifully with medium to full-flavoured cheeses, and may also be enjoyed on its own during moments of celebration.
