Wine Enthusiast 94 Points, #75 Top Cellar Selection April 2026, Tonya Pitts

Vibrant aromas on the nose of this wine offer lush black raspberry, dark strawberry, and sweet vanilla cream. On the palate, youthful red plum, blood orange, pomegranate-boysenberry coulis, nutmeg, and cinnamon are spiked with a dry supple finish. Cellar until 2032, or aerate and enjoy.

Overview

Domaine Anderson is nestled in the breathtaking, fog-cooled hillside and mountain terrain of Northern California’s Anderson Valley. The cooling marine layer that is characteristic of this region provides ideal conditions for the cultivation of pinot noir and chardonnay grapes. Winemaker Darrin Low crafts wines with precision and care to express the uniqueness of our Anderson Valley terroir.

The 2022 Domaine Anderson Estate Pinot Noir is a blend of 57% Dach vineyard, our Demeter Biodynamic® and CCOF organic certified 20-acre home ranch, and 43% Walraven vineyard, our warmest inland site and CCOF organic certified vineyard overlooking the town of Boonville.

Winemaking

Small batches underwent spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast. A mix of punchdown, foot treading and pumpover was employed during an average 12 days on the skins before pressing in our small basket press.

The juice underwent a lengthy, cool native malolactic fermentation in 60-gallon neutral French oak barrels, continuing through the following spring. To preserve the purity of fruit with restrained oak influence, 16% new French oak barrels were used. After 15 months of cellar aging, the wine was racked, blended and bottled in the winter of the following year.

Tasting Notes

The wine displays a deep garnet color. Aromas of ripe cherry and violets mingle with notes of licorice and cinnamon. The palate is juicy and concentrated, lifted by bright acidity that is supported by supple tannins. Black cherry flavors, umami richness and a faint saltiness lead into a lingering and savory finish.

Harvest Notes

The 2022 vintage was defined by exceptional quality and low yields, a result of a third year of drought conditions. A relatively mild August gave way to a hot and dry September, which accelerated ripening and produced intensely concentrated flavors. Harvest was compact and fast paced, with the Estate Pinot Noir parcels picked over the week of Sept. 8-13, 2022.

Food Pairing

Pairs with braised meats, dishes such as gorgonzola with mushroom risotto, and a variety of cheeses.
