Reviews

Wine Spectator 92 Points November 15, 2024, Kristen Bieler

The texture is impressive, with its subtle chewiness supporting blackberry pâte de fruit, violet and light mesquite notes. Elements of loam and earthy leafiness bring a savory dimension alongside floral violet and smoke highlights. Charred mesquite marks the elegant and suave finish. Well-done. Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2032.

Overview

Domaines Ott was founded in 1896 by Alsatian engineer Marcel Ott. Today, the wineries are owned and managed by Champagne Louis Roederer, producing some of the world’s most prestigious wines. These wines are made at three distinctively different estates in two different appellations: Château Romassan (Bandol), Clos Mireille, and Château de Selle (both Côtes de Provence).

Château Romassan is the third estate acquired by the Ott family in 1956, located in the Bandol appellation and lies at the foot of the village of Le Castellet. The Bandol appellation is known for its terraced vineyards of varying exposures. The 220 acres of vineyards are split between the Bandol appellation’s eight communes and planted on marl and limestone soils that are particularly well suited to Mourvèdre. They are composed of two main climates. The grapes grown in the valley offer fresh, crunchy juice whereas those grown at higher altitudes on the terraced hillsides produce wines with more body and structure.

Winemaking

Hand-harvested grapes are cooled overnight. The grapes are gravity-fed into concrete tanks for maceration. Daily pumping of the juice over the pomace cap. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, followed by 18 to 24 months in bottle—well beyond the Bandol appellation's regulations.

Tasting Notes

Attractive garnet-red hue with ruby tints. Minty nose of morello cherries and blueberries with notes of lightly toasted violets. Silky mouthfeel on a very fresh palate. Smooth, well-structured tannins, aromas of ripe black fruit and a hint of liquorice on the finish.

Harvest Notes

2020 was another year with particularly mild annual temperatures. The average 800 mm of rainfall fell mainly from October to March. After a very mild winter, budburst took place in the first fortnight of March. The mild weather at the end of May ensured a successful flowering. The emergence of the clusters was uniform in all the vineyards. June brought long hot days. Due to the healthy conditions, we decided to stop our natural treatments and ploughing work to prevent any stress to the vines, which continued along their life cycle enjoying the hot summer weather. We started harvesting on Wednesday 12 August to ensure that the 2020 vintage would be one of perfect balance and freshness.
